cues are funny, and i dont think a lot of them work for me
when michael or steve would just say "up", it didnt feel like much of a cue
i didnt feel the word associate with any part of my body or motion or the bar
obviously, what they're saying is correct, but it didn't make it tangible enough for me
it's a physical sport and the best coaches (according to papayats) are much more physical in their cueing, e.g. touching/slapping/poking parts of the body to activate them
this worked when michael pulled my elbow up in the pull
but also, one cue that makes sense to my body is "traps high"
i read this in a papayats post about either snatch balance or jerk
it refers to the posture when the bar is on the (front or rear) rack
your back is straight and extended, you stand tall
as opposed to hunching over, your traps are high
it's funny as a cue because your traps can't only elevate so much,
i mean you can shrug, but that's not what it's about
i don't know why it works for me
maybe because i'm a stoner and imagining 'traps high' among other things is just a funny quasi-logical way to say something
maybe i'll start cueing everything high - legs and hips high in extension, elbows high in pull, etc.
